Prosecutors ask for $1 million bond for defendant in child abuse and assault cases

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County prosecutors today asked a judge to increase a bond tenfold for a Cleveland man whose child abuse conviction and 28-year prison sentence was overturned by the Ohio Supreme Court.

Darius Clark, 27, was free for more than two years on a $50,000 appellate bond while he awaited a potential appearance before the U.S. Supreme Court. Earlier this month, the nation's highest court accepted a request by Cuyahoga County prosecutors to consider its appeal of the Ohio Supreme Court's 4-3 decision to overturn Clark's convictions.

Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Astrab, however, set an additional $500,000 bond on Tuesday after Clark was arrested on a new indictment, charging him with the felonious assault of a 17-year-old girl at the Broadway Care Center in Maple Heights in September. Clark also is charged with aggravated burglary and criminal damaging or endangering.
