Shooter pleads guilty to killing 5-year-old girl, blinding her mother; faces 18 years to life in prison

Cleveland – The man charged with shooting to death a 5-year-old girl and blinding her mother pleaded guilty Thursday to murder and felonious assault charges that could send him to prison for life.

After a day of plea negotiations between prosecutors and defense lawyers, Geoffrey Gurkovich, 33, pleaded guilty to the Jan. 19 murder of Jermani Brooks while she sat in a parked car on Crossburn Avenue in Cleveland.

Gurkovich pulled up alongside the car, got out and began firing, killing Jermani, injuring 9-year-old Cameron Delvalle, and blinding their mother, Noni Brooks, in the right eye. The mother approved the plea deal before it was entered, said Assistant County Prosecutor Blaise Thomas.
