First of 21 "John Does" sought from rape kit DNA identified

Cuyahoga County Prosecutors have matched the first of 21 suspects in cold case rapes based on DNA profiles from newly tested rape kits, they reported Friday.

George Young, who is serving a 32-year sentence for firing a gun into a crowd after being asked to leave a party, was matched to DNA from two rape kits when he was added to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation's database upon entering prison last September.

The rapes, of a 13-year-old girl in 1993 and a 37-year-old woman in 1996, were reported in Cleveland. A DNA profile was created from tests of the rape kit and handed over to a grand jury. The grand jury approved charges against the suspect, who had not yet been identified, and called him John Doe #1.
