Nurse sentenced after admitting to inappropriate sexual contact with woman in labor

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A nurse anesthetist student who admitted having unwanted sexual contact with woman who was in labor at Fairview Hospital in 2012 was ordered Tuesday to serve 60 days in the county jail and be monitored by probation officers for two years.

Cuyahoga County Judge Maureen Clancy said it was incomprehensible for someone to offend against someone in such a vulnerable position.

"It's just shocking to me," Clancy said.

James Lewis, 29, pleaded guilty in December to a felony charge of patient abuse and sexual imposition, a misdemeanor. Lewis agreed not to work in any healthcare field in the future. He also agreed to surrender his three nursing licenses in Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Lewis will have to register as a sex offender for 15 years.
