Juvenile judge finds teen fatally hit elderly woman

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After hearing evidence for a week, Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Michael J. Ryan today found that a teen fatally struck an 81-year-old Fairview Park woman with a vehicle last year.

Ryan decided that the teen drove recklessly and was delinquent of aggravated vehicular homicide. However, he found she did not knowingly leave the scene of the crash -- and likely didn't know she had hit Maxine Lobins.

"I just believe she was reckless on that day, and she made a very huge mistake," Ryan said.

The teen will be sentenced in about a month and will be on home detention without driving privileges until then, Ryan said. The judge has a range of options for sentencing from probation to a commitment to the Ohio Department of Youth Services.

Assistant County Prosecutor Norm Schroth said the judge's thoughtful verdict brought "justice for the Lobins family."
