New Conviction Integrity Unit will review innocence claims


CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A new unit created by Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty will review innocence claims made by felons convicted of crimes in Cuyahoga County.

McGinty said he's putting the process in place to continue to build public confidence in the justice system.

"If we have erred or the system has erred, we want to correct it," McGinty said in an interview. "We want to believe in our convictions. We bear that ultimate responsibility."

The criminal justice system already has filters -- prosecutors, judges defense attorneys and juries -- to spot weaknesses that could lead to a wrongful convictions, McGinty said. But mistakes are still made.

"The numbers are small, but it happens," he said.
