Convicted rapist pleads guilty to killing 14-year-old Gloria Pointer; sentencing set for Friday

Cleveland -- A convicted rapist pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing 14-year-old Gloria Pointer in 1984.

A three-judge panel will meet Friday morning to dole out the punishment against Hernandez Warren, 59, of Cleveland, a delay  that angered those who wanted the case to come to an end.

"I thought, 'Are you kidding?' '' Yvonne Pointer, the girl's mother, said after a three-hour hearing in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. "We came here today, and we wanted it done today.''

Warren pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and rape in an agreement that calls for him to serve life in prison with a chance of parole after 30 years. He was scheduled to go to trial Sept. 8. If convicted at trial, he could have faced the death penalty.

He entered the plea before judges Michael Astrab, John O'Donnell and David Matia. The three judges must handle it based on laws from 1984 involving potential death-penalty cases.
