Cleveland man convicted in deadly wrong-way crash on I-480

Cleveland – A Cleveland man with a history of drunken-driving offenses was convicted Thursday in the wrong-way crash on I-480 that killed a 22-year-old woman in April.

Julio Vargas, 40, entered pleas of no contest to nine charges that included aggravated vehicular homicide and drunken-driving in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. Judge Stuart Friedman found him guilty and will sentence him July 29.

Vargas could face about 27 years in prison for the crash that killed Desiree Snyder, 22. He was driving with a suspended license for a drunken-driving charge just months earlier. His blood-alcohol content was 0.28 percent, nearly 3½ times the legal limit, authorities said.

He was driving a 2002 Suzuki SUV after drinking at a strip club on Brookpark Road. Blaise Thomas, an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor, said Vargas headed the wrong way as he entered the exit ramp to I-480 at West 130th Street
