Cuyahoga County prosecutor pledges crackdown on illegal guns
Cleveland -- Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty has rolled out an aggressive approach to seek harsher prison sentences for criminals who use illegally gotten guns to carry out violence.
From now on, prosecutors will tack on more gun specifications that carry mandatory prison sentences, refuse to drop them during plea negotiations and will fight for higher bonds.
And prosecutors will run every gun seized during investigations through a national ballistics database to see if the gun was used in other crimes.
"This gun policy will send a deterrent message to violent criminals and gangs that illegal guns are the ticket to prison," McGinty wrote in a February letter to his assistant prosecutors announcing the new policy.
