Lorain man indicted in State Trooper's death on I-90
A 37-year-old Lorain County man has been indicted in the death of Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Kenneth Velez, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty announced today.
A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury this afternoon charged Joshua J. Gaspar of Columbia Station with two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and one misdemeanor count of Driving While Under the Influence.
State Trooper Velez, 48, was standing outside his patrol car on Interstate 90 near the Lakewood-Cleveland line while conducting routine traffic enforcement around 12:52 p.m. on September 15.
That’s when a black 2015 Hyundai Velostar driven by Gaspar struck the officer after swerving toward the berm to avoid another vehicle. State Trooper Velez, who joined the Highway Patrol in 1989 and most recently had been assigned to its Cleveland Post, was fatally injured in the crash. He was laid to rest last week.
Defendant Gaspar was arrested after the crash. He has been held since in Cuyahoga County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
