Father sentenced in the shooting death of 1-year-old son

Ricardo Sims, who left two loaded handguns within the reach of children, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for the accidental shooting death of his 1-year-old son.

Sims and Shanee Robinson, the child’s mother, pled guilty in September to Involuntary Manslaughter and Endangering Children.

On April 12, 2015, Shanee Robinson, 24, was watching her son Braylon and two other children. A 3-year-old found a handgun and fatally shot Braylon in the head.

Sims, 27, did not live at the residence but kept two loaded handguns there, accessible to where the children were playing. Police found the second weapon under a sofa.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Nancy R. McDonnell sentenced Robinson to three years of community control sanctions. Sims received 18 months for the Involuntary Manslaughter and Endangering Children counts, plus an additional, mandatory 12 months for the firearm specification attached to the manslaughter charge.

“This was a preventable tragedy,” said Judge McDonnell. “You lost your child and it is very difficult to hear all of this and know the outcome.”

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kristin M. Karkutt showed the court footage taken at the scene by a police body camera. The video showed the small size of the room and the second handgun found under the couch.

“Sims did not live in the home,” said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Karkutt. “Yet he kept not one, but two loaded firearms there, amounting to reckless and criminal behavior.”
