Statement from Prosecutor McGinty on the jury's recommendation of the death penalty for Douglas Shine Jr.

11/19/2016

“The jurors have lived with the horrific facts of this case for more than two months, and we respect their difficult decision. The outcome here guarantees that Douglas Shine Jr. will never again be free to kill, and shows that this community will not tolerate the indiscriminate gang murder of innocents.

“Law enforcement formed a team that was absolutely determined to solve the case and bring this mass-murderer to justice: Warrensville Heights Police Department, Cleveland Police Gang Impact Unit, the FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission, the Sheriff’s Department, the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office all worked together. This investigation and this verdict should send a powerful message to other reckless gang killers.

“Most of all we thank the witnesses who had the courage to testify despite intimidation and the knowledge that this defendant had already arranged the murder of an eyewitness from his jail cell.”
