Knife-wielding killer sentenced to life in prison for attack at ex-girlfriend's home

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Donald Parker brought a 13-inch butcher knife to a fistfight. He'll pay for it the rest of his life.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Janet Burnside sentenced Parker on Thursday to life in prison for stabbing Gabriel Payne, 35, to death June 10. Parker's first chance at parole will be in 20 years.

Burnside convicted Parker, 32, of Cleveland, of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and aggravated burglary following a weeklong trial last month. Parker waived a jury trial. His lawyers, Reuben Sheperd and Eric Norton, tried the case to Burnside.

The case stemmed from a dispute over his former girlfriend, according to lawyers in the case. About 1:30 a.m. June 10, Parker walked to the woman's home on West 46th Street and broke into it. Parker had been drinking. He confronted Payne in the home, and he told Payne to head outside with him.
