CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley and Cleveland Police Department Chief Calvin Williams announced that a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury has indicted Andre McKelvey, 18, Robert McKelvey Jr., 21, and Keyshawn Smith, 19, for the murder of Mohamed Shahin, 33, on February 5th, 2019.  These three men, along with Kadijah Akram, 20, were also indicted for numerous armed robberies around Cuyahoga County between January 13th, 2019 and February 18th, 2019.

“This was a gang of gun-toting robbers that preyed on commercial businesses in Cuyahoga County,” said Prosecutor O’Malley.  “They committed at least nine armed robberies in a month and murdered a 33-year-old beverage store owner in the process. This case is being evaluated for capital charges.”

“The Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit investigators work diligently every day to solve the city’s most atrocious crimes,” said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin D. Williams.  “I am proud of the efforts they’ve put forth and I hope that this indictment brings at least some peace to the family of the victim, Mohamed Shahin.  I am always grateful for the partnership that the Division of Police has with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, as our collaborative efforts continue to bring the most violent offenders to justice.”

McKelvey, McKelvey Jr., and Smith have been charged with Aggravated Murder, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Burglary, Murder, Kidnapping, and Felonious Assault.  Akram has been charged with Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Burglary, and Kidnapping.  Both Akram and Andre McKelvey are also charged with Having Weapons Under Disability.

On February 5th, Cleveland Police responded to a report of an armed robbery and shooting at a beverage store located in Cleveland near Lakeview Road and Durant Avenue.  The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to the hospital where he later died.  CPD’s Homicide Unit identified McKelvey, McKelvey Jr., and Smith as responsible for the murder.

Further investigation by CPD also linked the three males, and Akram, to eight other armed robberies between January 13th and February 18th.  The group targeted a retail business, gas stations, and convenience stores located in Cleveland, University Heights, and Maple Heights.

Arraignment is scheduled for April 4th at 8:30am at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center.
