CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley announced that a Cuyahoga County jury found Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis guilty of Aggravated Murder for the purposeful killing of four-year-old Aniya Day Garrett.

“Aniya never stood a chance at life with a mother like Sierra Day,” said Prosecutor O’Malley.  “Day and her boyfriend Deonte Lewis were held responsible today for the physical abuse and persistent and unfathomable neglect that led to Aniya’s death.”

The jury found both Day and Lewis guilty of the following charges:

Aggravated Murder
Felonious Assault
Permitting Child Abuse
3 counts of Endangering Children
Tampering With Evidence

On March 11th, 2018, Euclid police responded to an apartment complex off Lakeshore Blvd near Sims Park for a report that a four-year-old child, Aniya Day Garrett, was not breathing.  Medics on scene observed that the victim had areas which appeared to be burns on her body and a large black bruise on her left eye.  She was taken to Euclid General Hospital where she was confirmed with no more signs of life.

The cause of death was cerebral necrosis due to blunt impacts to the head with subdural hematoma.  The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office also found that she was emaciated, malnourished and undernourished, and had suffered a large stroke due to tearing blood vessels on the brain.  After gathering information on scene, Euclid police arrested Sierra Day (24) and Deonte Lewis (27) – Aniya’s mother and mother’s boyfriend.

Prosecutors called 38 witnesses to testify in trial that spanned six days.

Judge McCormick is scheduled to sentence both Day on Lewis at 12:15pm on March 20th.
