Hernandez Warren Indicted for the 1984
Death of 14-Year-Old Gloria Pointer

CLEVELAND- Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty announced that Hernandez L. Warren, 58, of Cleveland, was charged in an eight count indictment including; two counts of Aggravated Murder, one count of rape, four counts of Kidnapping, and one count of Aggravated Robbery. 

On December 6, 1984, 14-year-old Gloria Pointer telephoned her schoolmate to plan walking to school together. At the time, the victim lived on East 114th Street and her friend lived on East 105th Street, both residences located in Cleveland. The phone call was made at approximately 7:00 am by Gloria Pointer. By 7:30 am, the waiting friend had left for school without seeing the victim.

The principal of Harry E. Davis School had called the victim’s parents after learning that the victim failed to show for class. Several witnesses had seen the victim walking on Orville Avenue toward her school with a black male following behind her. A witness had expressed at the time that they had seen a male with a brown coat and knit cap grab the victim’s arm. The two disappeared near 10515 Orville Avenue. The victim’s body was discovered at approximately 10:30 am at the bottom of a fire escape stairwell by an apartment building custodian.

This case has been actively investigated since 1984 by Cleveland Police Homicide Detectives, FBI, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit, and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department. Hundreds of leads and thousands of man hours have been expended in a determination to find the individual responsible for this crime. DNA stains on the victim’s clothing resulted in a profile being developed and subsequently matching Hernandez Warren. Warren was arrested on May 13, 2013, by a Task Force which included representatives from the Cleveland Police Department, FBI, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit.

This case will be reviewed for possible capital specifications by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Capital Review Committee.
