Israel Wingo Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison
for Sexually Abusing Autistic Teenager
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 11, 2013
CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Janet R. Burnside sentenced Israel Wingo to 13½ years in prison today, Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty announced.
Wingo, 68, of Cleveland, sexually assaulted an autistic 17-year-old female on the city’s Near West Side. Wingo was the father of the victim’s friend. The abuse was uncovered after a watchful city employee at Roberto Clemente Park became suspicious of Wingo’s frequent interactions with the victim.
Concerned that the victim appeared to be emotionally upset after leaving Wingo’s truck, playground director William Morrison talked to her and eventually convinced her to speak to police. Further investigation revealed that Wingo repeatedly sexually attacked the young woman, sent her explicit text messages and videotaped her in the nude.
Wingo was arrested on July 18, 2013, and on October 30th entered a plea of guilty to six counts of Pandering Sexually-Oriented Matter Involving a Minor, one count of Endangering Children, one count of Gross Sexual Imposition, one count of Possessing Criminal Tools and one count of Illegal Use of a Minor in Nudity Oriented Material or Performance.
Assistant County Prosecutor Frankie Goldberg who prosecuted the case said, “The victim trusted this defendant and he breached that trust. The crimes he committed upon the victim, a friend of his daughter, were the ultimate betrayal.”
Upon release from prison, Wingo will be required to register as a Tier II Sexual Offender.
